". . . but I have MILES TO GO before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep." Robert Frost

"By The Way, Which One's Pink?"
got an unfortunate load that required waiting 6 hours this past afternoon that delivers in Kansas City 1100 miles away in 40 hours. Somehow, with modern math, I can't drive 19 hours in 2 shifts with 2 10 hour breaks and get there in time, but I CAN drive in 4 5 hour shifts with a 5 hour nap in between and get there an hour early. It's called a split shift and is a bit tiring if you don't do it non-stop, but I need to do it from time to time when the schedule requires it.
I don't normally like driving at night, lots of negative things from light glare, to poor visibility, to animals, to drunks, to being more easily tired even on shorter driving shifts. But, on the other hand, there's always been something seductive about driving late at night. I'll always remember a road trip I made as a 19 year old with a friend (John Kelbaugh), we went to NYC for a Friday night, couldn't find a cheap place to park, so decided to drive overnight to Rochester, NY where he knew some people. It was a long night and I recall hearing an eerie conversation on the c.b. with one trucker talking to another A: Y'all right? long pause B: Yeah long pause A) Y'all right? long pause B) Yeah, just let 'er drift a bit too much. Didn't spray you with gravel did I? long pause A) Nah. It's late, maybe we should hit the travel plaza up here. long pause A) Y'all right? B) Yeah, guess I could use a cup.
Never saw them but it was a spooky glance at being a tired trucker.
Ever notice there is some music that is perfect at different times of day? Summertime, sunshine, window down is great for Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, Sheryl Crowe, and the Eagles. But night time, that's for Steve Miller "Book of Dreams", Dire Staights "Brothers In Arms" and any Pink Floyd. There's just something neat about being one of the few moving about at 3:15 a.m. - cruising down a dark road past farms, sleeping cows, and dark woods and coming across that one place with the flickering blue light from a tv on in the living room. Truckers flash lights just to say hi for no reason and cruising into toll booths is like having to wake up with the bright lights and chatting briefly with the attendant. I've never chattered on the c.b. so don't usually have it on at night, just those great FM tunes blasting. Sorry, Dad, no John Denver played here! Time to get going again after nap 1 - will get another in Indiana late tomorrow morning.bb.
No come backs - shout out
