". . . but I have MILES TO GO before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep." Robert Frost
Dangerous Day on I-85
Don't know the details, but passed a fatal accident south of Charlotte, NC. All I could tell as I went by was an 18 wheeler with damage to his front end and about 50 feet in front of him, an 18 wheel flatbed that had burned to the ground. There was no tractor left, just a hulk of melted steel where the engine had been, no chasis, no cab, no tires. Can't tell if he was hit by the guy behind and went into the jersey barrier or maybe stopped quick to avoid traffic and hit it on his own. I'd guess the concrete ruptured the fuel tank.
A while later, north of Durham, as I watched, a car in the opposite side slowed for an exit ramp and was rearended. That car was rearended, and finally car #4 hit the stopped pile at near full speed. His rearend went in the air, his windshield shattered out, the hood crumpled over the base of the windshield and a tire flew off. That mantra returns : don't follow so closely.
Traffic has been relatively light so I'm surprised by the accidents but I will say I've seen more stupid driving out here today overall than usual.
