". . . but I have MILES TO GO before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep." Robert Frost
I WARNED YOU this might happen !
Woke up this morning to the beep of my qualcom computer with my dispatch assignment, to, ORLANDO ! So I politely (of course) sent a message reminding them I was supposed to go to PA for time off and that I knew there was a trailer loaded for Palmyra ready to go. So, no problem, they switched my assignment and I'm headed east again.
Wind has died down today, great blue skies. There's one way truckers are like kids, we LOVE fancy trucks, big trucks, tough trucks, loud trucks . . . We stop and stare at those with fancy murals, we marvel at the extra-long 125 foot steel beams carried by drop deck trailers with 30 sets of tires, we admire the huge construction equipment rolling by on "wide-load" flatbeds. And we love the brightly colored team transports of NASCAR. There's a race back in Vegas next weekend and I think they had this past weekend off, so most of the teams are now rolling west, many of them from Carolina coming right past on I-40. I've watched the teams of Petty, Labonte, Stewart and some others go by. The trucks are easy to spot, the custom coaches a bit more subtle, the item that makes them different from the usual well off traveler is that instead of a car or truck being towed behind the bus or motor-home, it's a golf cart - the preferred means of getting around the huge speedways (though last year at Indy there were a lot of people on motorized scooters). The most interesting 'parade' I've seen over the years was after a Sunday race at the Poconos in Pennsylvania. You can tell who crapped out with a bad engine early or had a wreck as they are the first to hit the highway, but by 7pm, most teams are packed, loaded, and rolling down I-83 towards their home garages in NC and SC. That day I was I-83 in Virginia and began to notice that raqce fans were parked along the highway and on overpasses! They had lawn chairs, banners, coolers, and were just waiting for their favorite driver's rig to roll by! I can proudly say I was left in the dust of the best: Gordon, Unser, Petty, Earnhardt, and my favorite (Miller Lite sponsor don't you know) Rusty Wallace when the group of transports overtook me enroute to NC !
I've rerouted this trip, didn't realize it was so much longer to run across I-40 so after stopping at Oklahoma City for the night, I'll motor up I-44 to St. Louis and go east on I-70. Stops in Troy, Ill (east of St. Louis), Indy, and New Kingstown by Thursday.
By Friday I'll clean out this truck, pack my stuff into the Blue Marble, and be headed home for 2 weeks off. Time to 'start my engine' and get rolling again (lunch break in Amarillo).bb.
