". . . but I have MILES TO GO before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep." Robert Frost
(sniff, sniff! pancakes anyone?)
Finally! An evening to relax! The last 2 days have been non-stop. Yesterday I woke in Grand Rapids with the truck blanketed by 4 inches of snow and the highway unplowed. So I did what any hardworking coach-potato would do : I rolled over in bed and went back to sleep! At 10am the sateliite com beeped and dispatch wanted to know when I would be down in Indiana 170 miles away. I told them of the weather and my late start and said I'd be there by 4pm which I was. At 4pm she had me dispatched over to central Ohio, another 3 hours drive where I was to get a trailer which had to go 10 hours to Iowa by noon the next day (today). But this was a rare occasion where they had to load the product (big bags of flour) into my truck as I waited. In order to do the trip on time with an 8 hour sleep break, I had to be gone by 7pm (a half hour after I arrived). They weren't done until 10pm. I drove til 1am then shut down for the nite. Woke up this morning and messaged dispatch that due to the 3 hour delay, I wouldn't arrive with the product until 3pm. I figured they'd reschedule my unloading for the morning. Nope! They wanted it ASAP so I continued in and they were waiting for me when I rolled into the plant.
With that off-loaded, I went to another part of town
( BY THE WAY ! Cedar Rapids, Iowa has to be the best smelling town in America!! Pilsbury, General Mills, and Quaker Oats all have plants there and the air is just like walking into a country kitchen!!)
I dropped my empty trailer, grabbed a loaded one, and am headed back to Indiana. I'll wait til morning to tell my dispatcher my ETA will be around 3pm giving me time to drive the remaining 300 miles and to stop at the truckstop for lunch and a shower. With luck, she won't repeat that run to Ohio and back to Iowa again. Weather is cold with flurries almost all day from Ohio to Iowa but no accumulations. Tonite I'm camped out at Davenport, IA.
