". . . but I have MILES TO GO before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep." Robert Frost
the aftermath
Well, turns out I didn't see any accidents last night, but have seen the results of 6 this morning including one that happened infront of me. Sleet had just stopped when I pulled out this morning and the roads were ok - it was a little after 9 so I hoped the heavier rushhour traffic wouldn't be a factor and it wasn't.
Immediately I began going past cars that had wiped out last night and were buried in snow drifts. Then an Izusu Trooper passed me (I was traveling near 55 mph - the weight of the truck makes driving over the ridges of slush and ice a lot easier than it is for lighter cars - stopping is the big concern for a rig, so I always leave lots of room in front of me as I increase my speed). Shortly after getting by me, he tried to cut back in front of me but did it too quickly. His rear end kept going right when he tried to straighten out. Then began the fishtailing as I got off the accelerator and checked my mirrors to see if I had any traffic next to me (I didn't). The Trooper was actually a safe distance in front of me so I wasn't too concerned as he went wide right, then wide left, up against the jersey barrier, then hard right across all 4 lanes, spinning backwards over the right shoulder and disappearing from sight in a cloud of snow in a 15' deep ditch. Smoke and steam everywhere and a car behind me slowed and pulled over to check on the driver. The hill up into Kentucky still had huge slabs of ice stuck to the road that plows had missed so some cars had hit these mini-boulders and wrecked but I cruised up and over without a problem. A few miles later, all by itself, in the middle of the northbound lanes, was a pickup truck sitting on it's roof. Police and Fire were already there and the highway immediately backed up several miles. A bad morning for Cincinnati.
I got my delivery to Orlando delayed a day so I'm in no rush. Will park at the terminal in Marietta, GA for a day to get repairs done to the trailer (we service the trailer systems every 2 months). Fingers crossed the rest of the day will go ok - it's foggy, but the temps are up above freezing and the roads mostly wet, not icy.
PUB UPDATE : for those interested, word is that the players in the Arson investigation, Valerie, Amanda, and Michael have all pleaded out. Guilty to conspiracy to commit arson charges. Valerie and Amanda go to trial today, Michael next month.
